Capital City Farmers Market

164-206 US-2, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA
164-206 US-2, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Brief Event Description:

The Capital City Farmers Market moves to State Street in downtown Montpelier this year. Shop from 50 local farms and producers all season long, rain or shine. All products are grown or hand made by vendors from Central Vermont. Featuring live music through September.

www.montpelierfarmersmarket. com

Full State Street Move Information:

This year is the Capital City Farmers Market’s 41st season, and there will be some big changes. Our outdoor market will be held at a new location on State Street in downtown Montpelier this year. We trialed this location last Fall for three market days, and it was a huge success. State Street will be shut down between Main St. and Elm St. on market days which makes for an easily walkable downtown area. Our regular market lot will be open for parking, which will be a net gain of parking spots compared to what we take up on the Street.

The market itself will offer the same great vendor mix that makes the market such a fun destination for locals and visitors to the area. We feature over 65 full time and seasonal vendors from Central Vermont that grow or make 100% of the products they sell. This includes everything from seasonal produce to small batch cheese and one of a kind crafts. The majority of our vendors this season are returning vendors, but we do have some new craft and local food vendors that will be at the market part time.

The outdoor market begins May 5th, during Montpelier’s May Day festivities. The market is open from 9:00 to 1:00 every Saturday from May through October. Our live music series begins May 19th and runs all Summer long. People can stay up to date on market vendors, music, and events by following us on Facebook, signing up for our weekly newsletter, or going to montpelierfarmersmarket.com

Horses are amazing, sentient, gentle beings that have a way of calming the soul and bringing inner peace to one’s self.   For those who are having a hard time in the grieving process, sometimes interaction with a horse can help where other interventions have fallen short. We are offering a 7 week support group program that will meet once a week for an hour. Our intent is to keep the group small with no more than 10 participants plus volunteers and instructors. We will be able to provide referral resources if issues come up during sessions that someone would want to seek some professional guidance for.

Face the River - A Presentation by the Vermont River Conservancy

713 Elm St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA
713 Elm St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Face the River – A Presentation by the Vermont River Conservancy
Thursday, September 6, 7- 8:30 pm at NBNC
Reminiscent of a time when rivers played a key role in industrialization, the river shores of our
cities and villages today are often the sites of abandoned industrial buildings, parking lots, and
other urban uses that hinder public access and compel us to “turn our backs to the river.” The
Vermont River Conservancy is championing a new approach where we Face the River and
restore a healthy connection between city and town residents and their rivers. VRC is partnering
with municipalities to envision river shore restoration projects, leading to the design of riverside
parks that reconnect residents with their rivers. In this presentation, VRC will reflect on the role of
rivers in Montpelier’s history and discuss current projects and opportunities to Face the
River. More Info

713 Elm St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Biodiversity University: Fall Warblers – Presentation
Wednesday, September 12, 7 – 8:30 pm
Roger Tory Peterson popularized the term “confusing fall warblers”, but don’t let that put you off
from learning and enjoying the warblers as they head south for the winter. With a little guidance
and practice, you’ll be able to identify most of the fall warblers you see. In this presentation, we
will lift the veil of mystery surrounding those “confusing fall warblers,” especially those seldom-
seen fall migrants like Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, and Orange-crowned warblers. Presented by
NBNC Executive Director Chip Darmstadt. Admission by donation.

Biodiversity University: Fall Warblers - Field Trip in Central Vermont

713 Elm St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA
713 Elm St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Saturday, September 15, 7 – 11 am
Taking the tools we developed during the presentation earlier in the week, we will spend the
morning at NBNC and nearby locations looking for warblers and other fall migrants. The riparian
woods and thickets along the North Branch are prime habitat for a variety of migrants. In addition
to many common species, we may find scarcer warblers such as Canada, Tennessee and
Northern Parula. A deep, instructive exploration of fall warbler identification and ecology. Never
again will confounding field marks stop you from enjoying Vermont’s fall avifauna! Fee: NBNC
members/non-members.

On September 17th, Peace & Justice Center in Burlington is hosting a workshop called “Seeing & Disrupting Racism” at Montpelier’s Unitarian Church from 6-7:30 pm. We were hoping that we could promote it in your calendar. The description for the event is as follows:

“This program was developed for predominantly white audiences because efforts to end racism do not fall solely on those oppressed. We start by defining racism. Facilitators will walk participants through the concept of white fragility, go over how it perpetuates racism, and specific ways to disrupt the cycle. This workshop is being offered free of charge thanks to support from the National Association of Social Workers Vermont.”

Author Reading with Rick Winston, Red Scare in the Green Mountains

135 Main St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA
135 Main St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Sept. 18, 7 pm

For a week in the summer of 1950, Vermont found itself on the front page of national newspapers, as Senator Joseph McCarthy charged that “Reds Infest Bethel, Randolph Center.”
Winston has been researching this fascinating story, which features two outspoken newspaper editors, a Tibetan Buddhist dignitary, a local self-described “Red Hunter,” two actual Communists from out of state, and two well-traveled, prolific authors who were summer residents of Bethel—the Far East expert Owen Lattimore, and the Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson. 135 Main St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA
135 Main St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Sept 18 – 7:00 pm

What happened in Vermont when the anti-Communist fear known as the “Red Scare” swept the country? Quite a bit, as it turns out. Author Rick Winston and Vermont historian Michael Sherman will explore some forgotten history as we see how a small, rural “rock-ribbed Republican” state with a historically libertarian streak handled the hysteria of the time. Rick will also read from his new book, “Red Scare in the Green Mountains: Vermont in the McCarthy Era 1946-1960.”
