It requires no special clothes or equipment, keeps you on your feet, takes only a few minutes each day, and can be learned at any age. This six-week introductory class will be one hour, however, participants who are repeating the introduction may stay for another half hour to begin exploring the second set of T’ai Chi.

T’ai Chi is a sequence of precise body movements done slowly and without effort that balance the flow of energy within the body. At once a moving form of meditation, a dynamic system of exercise to improve health, and an introduction to the basics of self-defense, T’ai Chi Chu’an has been practiced daily in China by millions for millennia. It requires no special clothes or equipment, keeps you on your feet, takes only a few minutes each day, and can be learned at any age. This six-week introductory class will be one hour, however, participants who are repeating the introduction may stay for another half hour to begin exploring the second set of T’ai Chi.

“One of the best Christmas stories ever – and certainly one of the funniest.” (The Seattle Times) When the town terrors, also known as the six Herdman kids, forego their usual mischief-making to take over the annual Christmas Pageant, they provide a completely new spin on the traditional story, including improving the gifts from the Wise Men. But this Christmas pageant is filled with surprises for everyone, including the Herdmans. Adapted from the best-selling children’s book, this production will feature the talents of local performers from across the Kingdom, from the very young to the young at heart, and is sure to fill your holiday season with laughter and joy.

“RBG” in Stowe

Sunday, December 16 at 2 pm

At 2 pm Sunday, December 16th the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe (JCOGS) will present the 2018 documentary RBG.

RBG chronicles the career of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, which spans several decades, and how she developed a legal legacy while becoming a pop culture icon. The film is a biographical depiction of Ginsburg from her birth in Brooklyn, New York, her college education and subsequent career as a law professor, her appointment to the federal judiciary by President Jimmy Carter, and eventual appointment to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton. The film includes interviews with feminist icon Gloria Steinem and NPR’s Nina Totenberg on Ginsburg’s trailblazing career focused on women’s rights, as well as showing Ginsburg’s playful side as she engages in jovial banter with the late arch-conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

This presentation is free, accessible, and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

JCOGS is located at 1189 Cape Cod Road in Stowe.

For more information please contact the JCOGS office at 802-253-1800 or go to www.JCOGS.org

Increase the Light: A Singing Experience

Wed. Dec. 19, 5:00-6:30pm

A multi-faith, multi-sensory experience for all-ages

NEW location: At Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, 122 Hourglass Dr., Stowe

Calling all who wish to bring more love into our communities!  In light of the Pittsburgh shooting, Rabbi David Fainsilber and the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe seek to bring people together in love to create song within community as you have never experienced before. Young and old, come stand with us — come sing with us!  Make this your first time up on stage at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center as we learn the simplified arrangement of a song “Light is Returning/Banish the Darkness” and then sing it to produce a sound about bringing more light to ourselves, our communities, and our greater world.  No need to be a superb singer; you just need to bring your love of singing. The final artistic product? An amazing video of the experience (featuring you) that will be promoted world-wide, with the backdrop of soulful voices and increased light.

Donations will be accepted for the Helen Day Art Center and Stowe Free Library’s recovery from a recent burst pipe, as well as HIAS –– Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society –– a refugee resettlement program in the U.S., an organization supported by the Tree of Life Synagogue and one of the reasons that congregation was attacked.

Presented by the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe, with our partners at Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center (Community and Education Fund), the Helen Day Art Center, Stowe Performing Arts, and the Greater Stowe Interfaith Coalition, including St. John’s in the Mountains Episcopal Church, Stowe Community Church, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stowe, and Bahá’ís of Stowe.  Special thanks to Stowe Media Group and the Stowe Reporter.

Dec. 27, 7 pm

Loving the pure joys of winter is something we have in common with the late, great Warren Miller —who helped create and capture the magic of skiing.

“Face of Winter,” the 69th installment from Warren Miller Entertainment presented by Volkswagen, will bring new and veteran athletes together to pay tribute to the man who started it all. Visit some of Warren’s favorite locations, from Engleberg to Chamonix, British Columbia to Alaska, Chile, Iceland, New Zealand, Washington and more.

Watch as world-class athletes like Jessie Diggins, Anna Segal, Dash Longe, Forrest Jillson, Amie Engerbretson, Seth Wescott, Jim Ryan and others carve the faces of remote mountain ranges and pursue the thrills of a life lived in high places.”

Winter S’Morestice Celebration - Bon Fire Place

Holiday, New Year & Solstice Celebration featuring the world’s largest S’More,

December 29th at Camp Meade, Middlesex

Come one, come all to Camp Meade’s Winter S’Morestice Celebration. Help create the world’s largest S’More, and celebrate the light and warmth of a community fire lit in the historic fireplace built by the Civilian Conservation Corps for Camp Meade in the 1930’s. The December 29th event features music, food, fire artists and dancers. There will be an evergreen maze as well as a bouncy house for kids. It all gets underway at 4:30pm and runs through 8pm.

Attendees are invited to bring ‘burnaments’ which folks will affix to a bonfire structure, and send off into the great beyond. The fire-centric focus goes beyond the giant bonfire; there will be warming barrels of fires for hanging around and a large urn of fire for warmth and conviviality. There will be performances by Cirque de Fuego, a troupe of fire breathing and twirling artists, and others. There will also be a couple of propane fired poofers which will poof fire from time to time just for fun.

Music will be provided by DJ Newt Wells of Peak Entertainment. There will be a bar with beer and wine and hot chocolate, and a food truck with focaccia and soups from Red Hen, and more.
