Horses are amazing, sentient, gentle beings that have a way of calming the soul and bringing inner peace to one’s self.   For those who are having a hard time in the grieving process, sometimes interaction with a horse can help where other interventions have fallen short. We are offering a 7 week support group program that will meet once a week for an hour. Our intent is to keep the group small with no more than 10 participants plus volunteers and instructors. We will be able to provide referral resources if issues come up during sessions that someone would want to seek some professional guidance for.

Reading with Author Rick Winston

122 School St # 1, Marshfield, VT 05658, USA
122 School St # 1, Marshfield, VT 05658, USA

Wednesday, October 3 at 7 pm.

Rick Winston explores some forgotten history as we see how a small, rural “rock-ribbed Republican” state with a historically libertarian streak handled the hysteria of the time. Far from the klieg lights of Washington D.C., Hollywood, and New York City, there were several fascinating stories in the Green Mountains: a high-profile academic firing, a conservative senator who helped take down Joseph McCarthy, controversies involving left-leaning summer residents, and some veteran newspaper editors who spoke out against McCarthy’s tactics. Now, as our country again experiences a political atmosphere charged with intolerance, condemnation, and widespread falsehoods, this book could not be more timely.  Copies will be available to purchase and for Rick to sign.

Capital City Farmers Market

164-206 US-2, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA
164-206 US-2, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Brief Event Description:

The Capital City Farmers Market moves to State Street in downtown Montpelier this year. Shop from 50 local farms and producers all season long, rain or shine. All products are grown or hand made by vendors from Central Vermont. Featuring live music through September.

www.montpelierfarmersmarket. com

Full State Street Move Information:

This year is the Capital City Farmers Market’s 41st season, and there will be some big changes. Our outdoor market will be held at a new location on State Street in downtown Montpelier this year. We trialed this location last Fall for three market days, and it was a huge success. State Street will be shut down between Main St. and Elm St. on market days which makes for an easily walkable downtown area. Our regular market lot will be open for parking, which will be a net gain of parking spots compared to what we take up on the Street.

The market itself will offer the same great vendor mix that makes the market such a fun destination for locals and visitors to the area. We feature over 65 full time and seasonal vendors from Central Vermont that grow or make 100% of the products they sell. This includes everything from seasonal produce to small batch cheese and one of a kind crafts. The majority of our vendors this season are returning vendors, but we do have some new craft and local food vendors that will be at the market part time.

The outdoor market begins May 5th, during Montpelier’s May Day festivities. The market is open from 9:00 to 1:00 every Saturday from May through October. Our live music series begins May 19th and runs all Summer long. People can stay up to date on market vendors, music, and events by following us on Facebook, signing up for our weekly newsletter, or going to montpelierfarmersmarket.com

Madeliene Kunin Reading

2875 Hardwick St, Greensboro, VT 05841, USA
2875 Hardwick St, Greensboro, VT 05841, USA

Tuesday, October 9 @ 7:00 pm
Presented with The Galaxy Bookshop

Former three-term governor of Vermont Madeliene Kunin comes to the Highland Center for the Arts to read from her newest book, a memoir entitled Coming of Age: My Journey to the Eighties. The topic is aging, and she explores physical and emotional tolls and explores the emotional ones in an extraordinary life: governor, ambassador, feminist, wife, mother, professor, poet, and much, much more. As recently reported in the New York Times, a girl born today can expect to live to the age of 90, on average (boys, on the other hand, can expect to live until age 85). Life expectancy, for many, is increasing, yet people rarely contemplate the emotional changes that come alongside the physical changes of aging. Coming of Age: My Journey to the Eighties takes a close and incisive look at what it is like to grow old.

Free Range Learning in the Digital Age: The Emerging Revolution in College, Career, and Education by Peter Smith (Author Reading & Signing)

Oct. 10, 7 pm

What if there were a road map for today’s adult learners? In his new book, Free-Range Learning in the Digital Age, Dr. Peter Smith explores what’s working in higher education today, and provides examples of innovative pathways to higher education success in the digital era for adult learners. On campus and online, college students have increasingly become a population of adult learners with, as Dr. Smith puts it, “hidden credentials.” These adult learners are motivated to use their background and experience, coupled with the power of technology, to earn required certifications and degrees flexibly and affordably. Capital City Farmers Market

164-206 US-2, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Vermont is making great strides to rethink how we see food waste and find opportunities for food recovery and redistribution to our local communities. Food donation has increased more than 40% since the implementation of the Universal Recycling and Composting Law, but there are still many opportunities to become involved in helping fight food insecurity in your community.

The NEK Food Cycle Coalition and NEWMOA have collaborated to create an informative and exciting workshop allowing food producers, distributors, farmers, schools, food pantries, and anyone invested or interested in food recovery and donation to:
-Network with others working to increase food rescue and find solutions to food insecurity
-Find out what can and cannot be donated
-Learn about liability protections and tax deductions
-And hear success stories and ideas for new opportunities or collaborations

We will be screening portions of Anthony Bourdain’s film “Wasted! The Story of Food Waste”, and will feature, among others, representatives from the EPA and VT Food Bank to create an informational yet informal opportunity to network and increase your understanding of local food recovery systems in Northern VT.

If you have any questions, please contact Shannon Choquette, NEKWMD Outreach Coordinator, at outreach@nekwmd.org, or 802-626-3532.

Murder, Mystery & Indigenous Mobility: An Archives Month Presentation by Jill Mudgett

Thursday, October 25, 6 – 8 pm

Vermont State Archives & Records Administration, 1078 US Route 2, Middlesex

Cost: Free

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ events/2240756856158528/

The Vermont State Archives & Records Administration invites the public to celebrate American Archives Month with them on Thursday, October 25th for a special program. Vermont is the traditional homeland of the Abenaki people, and current conversations about indigenous Vermont focus on Abenaki persistence on the land. This presentation by cultural historian Jill Mudgett tells another story about indigeneity in Vermont by focusing on a man from southern New England who arrived in Vermont during the late nineteenth century and was then murdered in the Vermont woods. Surviving archival documents of the murder and subsequent trial not only tell us what white Vermonters thought about indigeneity, but reveal much about Native agency, mobility, and presence on the land.

Doors open at 5:00pm for a behind-the-scenes tour of the archives and a special exhibit, directly followed by the presentation at 6:00pm. The address is 1078 US Route 2 in Middlesex, just behind the State Police barracks. Free and open to the public; no registration required. Questions? Contact us as sos.archives@vermont.gov or (802) 828-2308.

Lhabab Duchen, one of the four great holy days of the Buddhist calendar, celebrates the anniversary of Guru Shakyamuni’s descent from the God Realm of Thirty-three, following several months of teaching the Dharma to his mother and the gods who were living there. This year Lhabab Duchen takes place on Wednesday, October 31st.

As a merit multiplying day, the karmic results of actions done on this day are multiplied 100 million times. This amazing result is sourced by Lama Zopa Rinpoche to the vinaya text Treasure of Quotations and Logic.
