We’ll start each evening with a sing-along Song Circle using Rise Up Singing, the great collection of folk songs. Then we’ll explore some circle singing: lifting our voices in spontaneous harmony-rich songs. We’ll sing renditions of both traditional songs and fresh brand new songs that we create together as we explore how to turn a simple melody into a living, changing, multi-layered song. All voices and ages welcome.
Heidi is a singer songwriter with a passion for sharing original compositions and folk songs inspired by and in service to community and the natural world. She recently studied improvisation and circle singing with Bobby McFerrin and Rhiannon and is excited to keep exploring! Heidi has been leading a cappella singing groups for over 10 years. She currently leads the Plainfield Community Sing, teaches courses at the Summit School of Traditional Music and Culture, directs the Ollabelles, and is an instructor for Village Harmony.

How it gets from one to the other is the subject of the film, a journey undertaken by three men and a dog into the secrets of the past. Join us for a showing of this film adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel of the same name. With Elijah Wood and Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello fame.
Afterwards we will gather to illuminate our own heritage.

Civil Rights Activist Penny Patch to Speak at JSC’s MLK Day Event Jan. 16
Penny Patch, who was active in the 1960s with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a civil rights group, will be the keynote speaker at Johnson State College’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance Jan. 16.
The event, which will include remarks by JSC President Elaine Collins and a performance by the JSC Chorale, will begin at 11 a.m. at the Dibden Center for the Arts. It’s free and open to the public.
Patch, a longtime nurse midwife, became the first white woman to work on a SNCC project in the South in ’62, while she was a student at Swarthmore College.
The King day event reinforces the campus commitment to diversity and inclusion, social justice and community service.
President Collins was among the state education and business leaders who signed a statement to affirm Vermont’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusiveness.
Related initiatives this academic year include the college’s 1% Challenge, which encourages JSC community members to commit to donating 1 percent of their average work time – about 10 hours a semester – to community service.
And last semester, flags were installed on campus in support of several social justice causes.
“Understanding diversity is important because our community — on campus, in Johnson, in Vermont, in America — is made up of many histories and perspectives which deserve equal consideration,” JSC Director of Residence Life Jeff Bickford says.
He co-chairs the campus Diversity Task Force, which is coordinating the King day event with the support of JSC’s Office of First-Year Experience.

Montpelier Police Dept. will be holding Coffee with a Cop event on Saturday, 28 January 2017 from 8 – 10 AM at Kismet Farm to Table located at 52 State Street in Montpelier.
What is “Coffee with a Cop” you ask?
It’s a simple concept. Police and community members come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee.
In over 175 cities and towns in 36 states, “Coffee with a Cop” has done wonders for community trust, police legitimacy, and partnership building.
Community members come to a local “Coffee with a Cop” for a variety of reasons, but no matter why, they are likely to leave with a more positive impression of their local police department.
One of the keys to “Coffee with a Cop’s” success is that it removes the physical barriers and crisis situations that routinely define interactions between law enforcement officials and community members. Instead it allows for relaxed, informal one-on-one interactions in a friendly atmosphere. This informal contact increases trust in police officers as individuals which is foundation to building partnerships and engaging in community problem solving.
Coffee will be provided at the event.
All are welcome! If you have any questions please contact me at this email or the number below.

Join photographer John Snell for a trip through photos to our neighbor Cuba, a place where time seems to have stopped but also the home to warm, rugged people determined to make their way in the world. The beauty of the landscape is stunning and that of the crumbling architecture surprisingly beautiful. Yes, there are old cars and so much more!
