Maple Corner Community Center, County Road, Calais, VT, United States

Looking for a good laugh during these uncertain times and a way to benefit a good cause at the same time?  There will be a staged reading of  Larry Shue’s hilarious farce THE FOREIGNER, on Saturday March 25th, at 7 pm, at the Maple Corner Community Center, located at 64 West County Road, in Maple Corner, Vermont.  Admission is by donation, and proceeds will go to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit legal advocacy organization specializing in civil rights.
Larry Shue wrote THE FOREIGNER back in 1983, but if, anything, the play is more timely today than it was then.  A hilarious send-up of American nativism, the play takes place in a hunting lodge deep in the woods of rural Georgia.  Charley, visiting from England, decides to pretend he can’t speak English in order to mask his acute shyness, leading him to overhear more than he should, including a nefarious plot to take over the lodge by the KKK.  You will laugh throughout, but also be reminded of the dangers of intolerance and prejudice.  A wonderful mixture of farce and social commentary, and great for the whole family.  The cast consists of Nancy Toulis, David Schutz, Bob Hannon, Peter Lind, Geof Hewitt, and Tom, Adam, and Susannah Blachly.  Sound effects will be courtesy of Artie Toulis.

In this lively parody of 1920’s musicals, The Drowsy Chaperone comes to life in the living room of the Man in Chair as he listens to his favorite record.  Alison Brodie directs her second show with the SHS Drama Club; Rebecca Elgood and Stacey Benoit return as music director and choreographer.  The Drowsy Chaperone, written by Bob Martin and Don McKellar and with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, is produced by special agreement with MTI.  Come enjoy a fun evening filled with tap dancing, roller skates, and gangsters and see for yourself why this show grabbed 5 Tony awards!
Shows are March 30, 31, and April 1 at 7:30 pm, with a matinee on April 1 at 2:00 pm.  Tickets are $10/adults; $7/students/staff/seniors; and $5/children.  Reserved tickets will be available at www.shsu61.org; general admission seats will be available at the door.  Spaulding High School Auditorium is located at 155 Ayers Street in Barre.
