Shape note music is a participatory a capella singing form that originated in New England 225 years ago and has been sung in Central Vermont for the past 40 or so years by folks intrigued by the history of the form and those moved by the haunting harmonies and spiritual nature of the words. ‘Shape Note’ refers to the notation style which uses shapes in the place of round notes, which was originally a teaching device for learning to sight read music. Anyone is welcome, regardless of singing experience.

This week’s Mid-Week Movie is presented in partnership with the Greensboro Free Library.

Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble star in this film following an ever-changing lineup of performers drawn from the ensemble’s more than 50 instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, arrangers, visual artists and storytellers as they gather in locations across the world, exploring the ways art can both preserve traditions and shape cultural evolution.

    Kind Bud’s Kind Dubs

Bud of The Kind Buds, creates acoustic guitar overdubs for an act he has named “Kind Dubs” and after 150 solo shows, his mastery of his looper is a skill to be heard and seen.   Bud records his guitar rhythm live on the looper and then hits a button which will begin to play the rhythm he recorded.  Bud then plays off that rhythm, taking leads and layering sounds.  A Kind Bud  show will have  a mixture of original tunes, Jerry Garcia, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and other funky tunes.  Bud is getting known for “playing the tunes” everyone loves, but not everyone does.

Singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips, who recently released the new album “Collateral,” will headline the fifth annual Do Good Fest on July 14, a free benefit festival that raises money for cancer patients.

National Life’s Do Good Fest Presented by The Point raises money for Branches of Hope, the cancer patient fund at Central Vermont Medical Center. In the first four years of the festival, $93,000 has been raised for Branches of Hope, which provides money to patients undergoing cancer treatment for routine and unexpected expenses such as housing, transportation, medical and other services as basic as paying for home heating oil.

The Do Good Fest – featuring food trucks, a beer tent, a nonprofit village and children’s activities in addition to music and fireworks – is free. Parking is $20 per vehicle in advance and $25 on the day of the show. All of the proceeds are donated directly to Branches of Hope.

The Point radio network is National Life’s partner in staging the Do Good Fest. Co-sponsors are the National Life Group Foundation, Harpoon Brewery and Montpelier Alive. More details are on the Do Good Fest website or at info@DoGoodFest.com.
