Sara Grey and her son, Kieron Means are the real deal. They play Old-time ballads, cowboy songs and Primitive Methodist hymns. Sara’s unique frailing banjo style and Kieron’s blues-inflected guitar are in perfect harmony and this, instinctive, family symbiosis is what sets them apart.
Sara’s love affair with traditional songs for over 60 years has given her an incomparable knowledge of songs and ballads and how they have moved and evolved. She wants to gather the songs and pass them on to future generations so that they will have the pleasure of hearing and singing them just as she has. Her career is not about herself, it has been about the songs, about sharing them with others and ensuring that they go on living in our traditions.
Kieron has become an outstanding performer of traditional songs from the US and from the UK ranging from Delta Blues to the traditional and old-timey music he learned as a young musician as he traveled and performed with Sara and many other musicians. His style is uniquely his own and his repertoire includes his own beautifully written contemporary songs.

Heliand Consort announces their latest woodwind quartet program, “Old World/New World Legends,” an eclectic mix of chamber music and song inspired by old world mythology and new world folk and dance music. Flutist Berta Frank, oboist Katie Oprea, clarinetist Elisabeth LeBlanc and bassoonist Rachael Elliott perform in three towns throughout the region: Friday, March 9th at 7:30 pm at the York Street Meeting House in Lyndon Corner; Saturday, March 10th at 6 pm at Zenbarn in Waterbury Center, and Sunday, March 11th at 2:30 pm at Brandon Music Cafe in Brandon.

The concerts feature virtuosic solos for each instrument as well as woodwind trios, quartets and songs. Listeners will enjoy the sensuous melodies and precocious harmonies of Claude Debussy, Jean Francaix and Benjamin Britten. Familiar folk dances include a Brazilian waltz by Francisco Mignone and a habañera by Cuban-American composer and saxophonist, Paquito D’Rivera.

The musicians will offer background about the pieces before performing, and audience members are always invited to meet the musicians and ask questions about the music! More about the ensemble and details on the upcoming concerts may be found at heliandconsort.org, or by calling (802) 735-3611.

Wisconsin-based guitarist/songwriter Willy Porter & singer/songwriter Carmen Nickerson perform at The Valley Players, Waitsfield VT March 10, 2018, 7:30 PM in support of their latest release Bonfire to Ash, produced by Grammy award winner Ben Wisch.

Bonfire to Ash marks the duo’s first full-length collaboration. This album charts experiences that bridge the intimate with the universal. From the heady bloom of new love (“Old Red Barn”), to the urgency to save love from skidding out of reach forever (“Loving On Her Mind”). Music critic for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Piet Levy, writes, “Ash burns brightest when Porter and Nickerson share their voices and different perspectives of a lonely relationship on “Echo of Love.””

Porter and Nickerson perfect an engaging dialogue through these songs that carries over into their captivating live shows.

Together these highly accomplished artists take audiences on a singular musical ride full of heart, grit, energy, and fun that showcases the best of what live music has to offer.
