Come bring your friends, neighbors and anyone wanting to help make a difference in our community to a concert to benefit the new “”Open Hands Cafe”” . On Friday evening, February 2nd starting at 7:00PM, area musicians Pam Bockes, Leeds Brewer, David Kaynor and Susan Reid will be performing at Christ Episcopal Church in the Parish Hall. These accomplished musicians don’t limit their tastes to any single genre. Rather, they play what they love including Swedish, Quebecoise, English Dance, Irish and American tunes as well as their own compositions.

A suggested donation of $10 per person will go to benefit the new Open Hand Cafe also located in the Parish Hall of Christ Church and open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings from 5:30 to 11:00. The Open Hands Cafe offers a delicious, hot, homemade and inexpensive breakfast menu and is the brain-child of George Estes as an effort to develop community, support the church, provide a warm safe place for the cold morning hours and fabulous food. Please come offer your support. Any contribution will be graciously accepted.

Quartet for the End of Time by Olivier Messiaen

7322 Mountain Rd, Stowe, VT 05672, USA
7322 Mountain Rd, Stowe, VT 05672, USA

The Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center is proud to present the rarely performed Quartet for the End of Time by Olivier Messiaen in an intimate on stage concert on Saturday, February 3, 7:30 pm.

This groundbreaking piece was written by Olivier Messiaen during his captivity as a WWII prisoner-of-war in Stalag VIII A, a German camp near the Polish border. Music-loving guards at the camp, recognizing Messiaen’s name, provided him with pencils, music manuscript paper, and solitude in an empty barrack so that he could compose. The work was inspired by text from the Book of Revelations.

Vermont composer Matt LaRocca will provide musical and historical insight before the concert, and will facilitate a talk-back after the performance. This complex and deeply moving 50-minute quartet features musicians from the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and TURNmusic including cellist Emily Taubl, violinist Brooke Quiggins Saulnier, pianist Claire Black, and clarinetist Dan Liptak.  The musicians and audience will both be on stage for the concert so seating is limited!

Tickets for Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time are $20 in advance, $25 the day of the concert. Spruce Peak Arts Members receive a 10-20% discount off purchases and an array of other Member benefits. Memberships start at just $75, become a Member today! Tickets may be purchased online by visiting www.sprucepeakarts.org or by calling the Ticket Office at 802-760-4634.

64 State St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Every second Sunday from 2-5 at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier out of the Sacred Harp. Shape note music is a participatory a capella singing form that originated in New England 225 years ago and has been sung in Central Vermont for the past 40 or so years by folks intrigued by the history of the form and those moved by the haunting harmonies and spiritual nature of the words. ‘Shape Note’ refers to the notation style which uses shapes in the place of round notes, which was originally a teaching device for learning to sight read music. Anyone is welcome, regardless of singing experience.

Kat wright, whose voice is both sultry and dynamic, delicate yet powerful; gritty but highly emotive and nuanced, has been described as “a young bonnie raitt meets amy winehouse”. Add to that voice enough stage presence to tame lions, and the combination of feline femininity proves immediately enchanting. There’s soul flowing in and out of her rock ‘n’ roll with a serpentine seduction. Some of soul music’s sweet, grand dames belt, shout, seethe, and succumb, while wright sings gently like a heartache’s apology. It’s funky in spots and beautiful all over. And it hurts a little … like it should. Band members kat wright // vocals josh weinstein // bass bob wagner // guitar ezra oklan // drums shane hardiman // keys jake whitesell // saxophone dave purcell // trumpet luke laplant // bari sax
