Vermont’s own Va-et-vient is a trio performing French, Québecois, Cajun, and Créole music. Carol Reed, Suzanne Germain, and Lausanne Allen each have backgrounds rich in French cultures and language through lifelong experiences living and traveling in French-speaking lands. They create beautiful harmonies, teaching and engaging audiences on both sides of the Quebec border. Take a step out of Vermont without actually leaving, and hear Va-et-vient at Brandon Music on December 1.

The GMYS Fall Concert on Sunday, December 9, 2:00 pm at the Barre Opera House will showcase all three orchestras. The Repertory, Concert, and Senior Orchestras will each perform their own musical offerings. The Repertory Orchestra under the baton of Paul Perley, Concert and Senior Orchestras under GMYS Artistic Director, Bob Blais. The Repertory Orchestra will be joined by special guest, Tom Frink, on clarinet to enhance their celebration of eastern European music. The Concert Orchestra’s musical offerings include pieces whose melodies will be familiar to the audience, even if their titles are not. Mr. Blais and the Senior Orchestra will present and all Elgar program and featuring the Elgar Cello Concerto played by Senior Soloist Maxwell Hughes of Montpelier.

NEK Community Orchestra Performs Dec. 9 at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon

The Northeast Kingdom Community Orchestra (NEKCO) will perform its winter concert at 3 pm Dec. 9 at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon’s Alexander Twilight Theatre. Admission for the public is by donation.

NEKCO, based at NVU-Lyndon, is led by conductor and artistic director Jason Bergman, an NVU-Lyndon adjunct instructor who directs the strings program at St. Johnsbury Academy.

The concert will feature works by Mozart, Stravinsky and other composers. The Northern Vermont University-Johnson Chamber Singers, led by NVU-Johnson assistant professor of music Bethany Plissey, will perform with NEKCO, in addition to young violinists with EPIC Music, a program of Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury.

The NEKCO concert has a unification theme to reflect the unification this year of Lyndon State College and Johnson State College as Northern Vermont University, with campuses in Lyndon and Johnson. Some NEKCO members will perform at the annual Winter Gala concert Dec. 16 at NVU-Johnson. The unification theme also reflects the diverse community of musicians in NEKCO.

The orchestra is made up partly of NVU-Lyndon and NVU-Johnson students, faculty and staff. NEKCO also includes students, teachers and staff from Lyndon Institute, St. Johnsbury Academy, Riverside School, St. Johnsbury School, Miller’s Run School, Burke Town School, Waterford Elementary School, Good Shepherd School, Danville School and Barnet School, as well as home-schooled students.

NEKCO was founded in 2004 by Beth Norris, who taught at Lyndon State College.

The Northern Vermont University-Johnson Concert Band will perform at 7 pm, Dec. 14 at Dibden Center for the Arts on campus. Admission is $5 per person for the public, with tickets available at the door.

NVU-Johnson instructor Steven Light directs the 50-member band. The concert will feature a variety of pieces, including a composition written by NVU-Johnson assistant professor of music Justin Rito, an arrangement of Renaissance dances by NVU music education students, and Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man.” The concert will include smaller ensembles from the band — flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, percussion — and mixed woodwind and low-brass selections.

The T.W. Wood Gallery in Montpelier announces a live musical event on Saturday Dec. 15, 2019. Tammy award winner Michael T. Jermyn’s Aristocratic Peasants will be playing live music in the Contemporary Gallery. Come enjoy quirky clever lyrics and melodic storytelling set to Michael Jermyn’s soulfully haunting voice. The band’s current iteration includes Ethan Ryea on lead  guitar, Micah Ball on bass, and Sam Markewich on drums.

The event is free and open to the public.

Also enjoy an afternoon of holiday shopping, as the gallery features pieces by local artists and artisans. Items include cards, puzzles, glassware, and art works. This is will be the last day to bid on the gallery’s silent auction pieces.

Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 12:00-4:00 pm and by appointment. Special Holiday hours include Fridays 12-8 pm  for December .  The Gallery is located at 46 Barre Street at the Center for Arts and Learning in Montpelier. Paul Asbell CD Release Show

Vermont guitarist Paul Asbell will be performing with his jazz quartet for a CD Release Show on Saturday, Dec 15, 7:30 pm, to celebrate the release of the CD “Burmese Panther”, on Busy Hands Records.

The show will be held at the Montpelier Unitarian Church, 130 Main St, in Montpelier. A $15 admission charge will include a discount towards purchase of the new CD. All ages are welcome.

The Quartet will include bassist Clyde Stats, drummer Gabe Jarrett, and saxophonist Michael Zsoldos, each of whom played on the CD recording.
