The Vermont Philharmonic and Music Director Lou Kosma, will hold its annual outdoor Summer Pops Concert at Moose Meadow Lodge in Duxbury.  This year’s performance will consist of Broadway medleys, old favorites and patriotic standards, and will include special guest artist, Anthony Laciura.  Tickets are available at the gate: $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for students.  In case of inclement weather the concert will be held at the Thatcher Brook Primary School in Waterbury.  For more information, see the Philharmonic’s website at www.vermontphilharmonic.org.

Anthony Laciura is known internationally for his work as an operatic tenor, and more recently as ‘Eddie Kessler’ on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Mr. Laciura has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera Company in more than 800 performances and has recently wrapped up his fourth season on the acclaimed series Boardwalk Empire.  Mr. Laciura’s talent as a unique character actor has taken him to the big screen, television, and on various stages throughout the world.  In addition to his singing career and acting, Anthony also directs Opera.

This year’s Pops program includes such classics as Sound of Music, the Empire Strikes Back, Victory at Sea by Richard Rodgers, Themes from 007, and many others, including your favorite marches.  The numbers Mr. Laciura will sing include Music of the Night (Phantom of the Opera), If I Were A Rich Man (Fiddler on the Roof), and O Sole Mio.  The Meadow opens for picnicking at 3:00 pm, and the concert starts at 4:00 pm.  Parking at Moose Meadow Lodge is limited, so carpooling is recommended.  This annual performance has become very popular over the years, so early arrival is also recommended in order to find your spot.

Brian McCarthy comes to the Highland Center for the Arts on August 18th at 7pm.

In his nine-piece chamber jazz ensemble work, The Better Angels of Our Nature, Vermont-based saxophonist Brian McCarthy explores popular songs of the American Civil War, and introduces original material based on figures and events of the era. A Civil War history buff, McCarthy found the era an ideal subject for a large-scale project that grew out of a Vermont Arts Council Creation Grant. Inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s appeal to “the better angels of our nature’ during his inaugural address, McCarthy’s opus locates the better angels at the heart of music. As he explains, “Jazz came from the African-American experience here in America. Out of the darkness of terrible slavery, Reconstruction and Jim Crow came this really beautiful art form.” Now, McCarthy brings Better Angels of our Nature to the to Highland Center Main Stage, pairing insightful new arrangements of vintage wartime folk songs with vibrant new compositions for his skilled Nonet to explore.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for EBT cardholders.

The Concert for Kids  on Saturday August 19th at 10:30 has an unusual twist as well, with a visit from the local Island Time Steel Drums, led by Scott Paulson and Barbara Smith. Youngsters will have a chance for a hands-on music learning experience, exploring the basics of playing the steel drums and then culminating with a performance. There will be two 45-minute educational on-stage sessions for groups of 13 students each, with the rest of the audience cheering them on. Early sign-ups are encouraged for the two session slots at www.islandtimesteel@hotmail.com.  The annual ice cream social follows for everyone, participants and audience alike.
