    Every second Sunday from 2-5 at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier out of the Sacred Harp. Shape note music is a participatory a capella singing form that originated in New England 225 years ago and has been sung in Central Vermont for the past 40 or so years by folks intrigued by the history of the form and those moved by the haunting harmonies and spiritual nature of the words. ‘Shape Note’ refers to the notation style which uses shapes in the place of round notes, which was originally a teaching device for learning to sight read music. Anyone is welcome, regardless of singing experience.

    The GMYS Fall Concert on Sunday, December 10, 2017, 2:00pm at the Barre Opera House will showcase all three orchestras.

    The Repertory, Concert, and Senior Orchestras will each perform their own musical offerings. The Repertory Orchestra is under the baton of Paul Perley. The Concert and Senior Orchestras are led by GMYS Artistic Director, Bob Blais.

    The Repertory Orchestra will be joined by a special guest, poet Tamra Higgins, who wrote “Your Daily Breath” specifically to fit with one of the musical offerings the students have prepared. Ms. Higgins will join the orchestra to read her poem during their performance.

    The Concert Orchestra will play several pieces in different styles, including La Bamba and Johann Strauss’ Radetzky March.

    Mr. Blais and the Senior Orchestra will present Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” Gershwin’s American in Paris, and the Glazunov Saxophone Concerto featuring Senior Soloist Matt Koucky of Montpelier.

    Tickets are available by donation at the door: Adults $15, Seniors $12, Students (K-12) $5, and children under 5 are free.

      Every second Sunday from 2-5 at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier out of the Sacred Harp. Shape note music is a participatory a capella singing form that originated in New England 225 years ago and has been sung in Central Vermont for the past 40 or so years by folks intrigued by the history of the form and those moved by the haunting harmonies and spiritual nature of the words. ‘Shape Note’ refers to the notation style which uses shapes in the place of round notes, which was originally a teaching device for learning to sight read music. Anyone is welcome, regardless of singing experience.

      The GMYS Fall Concert on Sunday, December 10, 2017, 2:00pm at the Barre Opera House will showcase all three orchestras.

      The Repertory, Concert, and Senior Orchestras will each perform their own musical offerings. The Repertory Orchestra is under the baton of Paul Perley. The Concert and Senior Orchestras are led by GMYS Artistic Director, Bob Blais.

      The Repertory Orchestra will be joined by a special guest, poet Tamra Higgins, who wrote “Your Daily Breath” specifically to fit with one of the musical offerings the students have prepared. Ms. Higgins will join the orchestra to read her poem during their performance.

      The Concert Orchestra will play several pieces in different styles, including La Bamba and Johann Strauss’ Radetzky March.

      Mr. Blais and the Senior Orchestra will present Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” Gershwin’s American in Paris, and the Glazunov Saxophone Concerto featuring Senior Soloist Matt Koucky of Montpelier.

      Tickets are available by donation at the door: Adults $15, Seniors $12, Students (K-12) $5, and children under 5 are free.

    The Concert Band, directed by JSC professor Steven Light, will perform a variety of pieces from jazz to classical from the U.S., Russia, Spain, Latin America, Australia and other regions.

    Light also directs the World Music Ensemble, which will perform pieces from Ghana, Japan, Java and Macedonia. For some pieces, students built instruments, including African mbiras, or thumb pianos, and Japanese kotos, which are stringed instruments. Some students will play a set of Javanese gamelan instruments, which include flutes and stringed and percussion instruments.

Deep, atmospheric, high-tempo beats and fiery, poetic, rapid-fire lyrics combine to form an underground sound that is positive, unique and highly danceable. A founding member of the golden dome musician’s collective and state and main records label, boomslang have appeared on state and main records compilation albums volumes i & ii. They’ve rocked crowds on stages all over vermont, opening up for acts such as the hieroglyphics, the gza, dj qbert, congo sanchez, zion-i, dj logic, lutan fyah and akae beka. After several years of developing their sound and testing it live on stage boomslang released their self-titled debut album in november of 2014 on the state and main records label. Their follow up album, attack the vampire, will be released in the fall of 2017.

    The annual Johnson State College Winter Gala Concert, with performances by multiple student choral groups, will be at 4 p.m. Dec. 17 at Dibden Center for the Arts on campus.

    Admission is $5 for the public and free with a JSC ID. A poinsettia raffle and silent auction of framed artwork, maple syrup, artisan jewelry and restaurant gift cards will support the Johnson State Chorale’s tour in Estonia, Finland and Latvia in July 2018.

    The concert will feature performances by a cappella and other groups, including the Chorale, Johnson State Chamber Singers, Badger Tones, Badger Pitches and Badger Beats. The JSC Holiday Brass will perform at intermission.     Ring in the New Year in style — at the capital city’s biggest dance party! Noyle Johnson Group presents Dave Keller’s 5th Annual New Year’s Eve Extravaganza at City Hall Arts Center in Montpelier.

    Back by popular demand, Dave Keller is upping the excitement this year, bringing his 9-piece Soul Revue! In the tradition of the great soul revues of the 1960’s (e.g., James Brown, Aretha Franklin), Keller has put together a group of Vermont’s most soulful musicians to keep the dance floor packed til well past midnight. Featuring three soul-fired singers (Keller, Morgan Klarich, and April Caspari), the fantastic Mo’ Sax Horns (Joe Moore, Jessica Friedman, and John Harrison), plus many extra-special surprise musical guests, all backed by Keller’s road-tested core band, this promises to be an unforgettable evening of fun for all ages.

    The City Hall Arts Center (home to Lost Nation Theater) will be transformed into a club atmosphere for the night, with a cash bar, desserts for purchase, complimentary champagne (21+) or sparkling cider toast at midnight, countdown and disco ball drop, dance contests, door prizes, and more! Fine attire suggested but not required. All ages welcome!

    Keller is known throughout VT, and across the U.S., as being one of the finest Soul and Blues musicians of his generation. A fiery guitarist, a deep soul singer, and a songwriter who writes from his heart, Keller has performed at the largest blues festivals in the East, as well as at respected venues such as B.B. King’s (Memphis) and Biscuits and Blues (San Francisco).

    His most recent CD, Right Back Atcha, was chosen as one of the best CDs of 2017 by Downbeat Magazine. His previous CD, featuring Al Green’s original Hi Rhythm Section, was a Blues Music Award Nominee for Best Soul/Blues Album of the Year. In addition to fronting his own Dave Keller Band, Keller has performed with many of the deepest soul and blues musicians: Ronnie Earl, Mighty Sam McClain, Big Jack Johnson, Fontella Bass, Dave Van Ronk, Robert Ward, and more.

    Tickets are $15 in advance, available by credit card at www.lostnationtheater.org, or by cash at Capitol Stationers, next to City Hall. Tickets are $20 at the door. Free for ages 17 and under.
