Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas Concert

1620 Center Rd, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA
1620 Center Rd, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

This duo brings their talents to the historic Old Meeting House in East Montpelier on Thursday, November 9th at 7:30. Tickets are available at The Old Meeting House website.

The musical partnership between Alasdair Fraser, long regarded as Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassador, and the sizzlingly-talented young California cellist Natalie Haas may not seem an obvious one. Fraser, acclaimed by the San Francisco Examiner as “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling,” has a concert and recording career spanning 30 years, with a long list of awards, accolades, television credits, and feature performances on top movie soundtracks (Last of the Mohicans, Titanic). Fraser has been sponsored by the British Council to represent Scotland’s music internationally, and received the Scottish Heritage Center Service Award for outstanding contributions to Scottish culture and traditions.

Natalie Haas, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, wasn’t even born when Alasdair was winning national fiddle competitions on the other side of the Atlantic. But this seemingly unlikely pairing is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser, whose cutting-edge musical explorations took him full circle to find a cellist who could help him return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music.

Veterans Day Concert featuring InoraBrass

4335 Main St, Waitsfield, VT 05673, USA

Saturday, November 11th, 7 pm

Waitsfield United Church of Christ, 4335 Main Street, Waitsfield

In honor of Veterans Day, one of the region’s premiere brass chamber music groups will present an evening of music by American composers, including patriotic favorites and selections by Bernstein, Joplin, and Sousa. InoraBrass will be joined by guest speaker Fred Messer, Commander of Mad River American Legion Post 75.

InoraBrass members are Chris Rivers and Jason Whitcomb, trumpets, Joy Worland, horn, Lori Salimando-Porter, trombone, and Bill Keck, tuba. Individually they perform and teach extensively throughout New England and Northern New York, and have played as a quintet in Burlington, the Mad River Valley, the Northeast Kingdom, and Plattsburgh. Inora’s debut concert in August 2014 “wowed” Seven Days reviewer Amy Lilly with a “sonorous wall of blown sound.” In sharing their artistry through live performances and music education, InoraBrass celebrates the parallel between the majesty of brass music and the natural beauty of Vermont and Northern New York.

Free admission, accessible entrance, family friendly. This concert is sponsored by the Friends of the Joslin Library.

Every second Sunday from 2-5 at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier out of the Sacred Harp. Shape note music is a participatory a capella singing form that originated in New England 225 years ago and has been sung in Central Vermont for the past 40 or so years by folks intrigued by the history of the form and those moved by the haunting harmonies and spiritual nature of the words. ‘Shape Note’ refers to the notation style which uses shapes in the place of round notes, which was originally a teaching device for learning to sight read music. Anyone is welcome, regardless of singing experience.

SACRED EARTH is Irish Accordion master and music producer, Sharon Shannon’s, first new studio album in 3 years and her 10thstudio album to date. Sharon Shannon is a musician who likes to surprise. While best known for her arrangements of traditional Irish tunes and Irish-influenced compositions, she’s always been eager to explore new styles.
There are Irish influences here of course but these are cheerfully mixed in with often unexpected styles from around the world, including for the first time, Africa; Sharon has perfectly mastered an African/Irish crossover. But Sacred Earth is more than this: it contains multiple musical elements from the around the world along with the Shetland Fiddle Tradition, Hip Hop, Country and Blues that all combine to make this album a ground-breaker in many ways.
