On Sunday, October 8th at 11am all are invited to gather in and around the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe’s (JCOGS) sukkah(temporary hut) to enjoy a delicious celebratory harvest brunch, followed by a Jazz concert performed by Classicopia.
Sukkot, or the “Feast of Booths”, commemorates the 40 years of Jewish wandering in the desert after the giving of the Torah and represents a time to give thanks for the bounty of the earth during the fall harvest, which coincides each year with the beauty of Vermont’s autumn leaf season.
This concert at JCOGS highlights the important place of Jewish instrumentalists, such as Benny Goodman, George Gershwin, and Artie Shaw, in bringing this new music to a wider white audience and into concert halls as well; elevating Jazz to a new cultural status. Loew and Weiser, who have both performed around the world, will perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and works by other Jewish composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Harold Arlen and Simon Sargon, who blended the sound of Klezmer and Jewish liturgical music with a new syncopated and jazzy sensibility.
This delightful “Sukkot Brunch and Jewish Jazz” fest is only $18 per person. JCOGS is handicap accessible and all are welcome. Reservations are appreciated, and may be made online at JCOGS.org or by phone through the JCOGS office at 802-253-1800.
