Shape Note Singing

64 State St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA
64 State St, Montpelier, VT 05602, USA

Every second Sunday from 2-5 at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier out of the Sacred Harp. Shape note music is a participatory a capella singing form that originated in New England 225 years ago and has been sung in Central Vermont for the past 40 or so years by folks intrigued by the history of the form and those moved by the haunting harmonies and spiritual nature of the words. ‘Shape Note’ refers to the notation style which uses shapes in the place of round notes, which was originally a teaching device for learning to sight read music. Anyone is welcome, regardless of singing experience.

Classicopia presents "JEWISH JAZZ" in Stowe

1189 Cape Cod Rd, Stowe, VT 05672, USA
1189 Cape Cod Rd, Stowe, VT 05672, USA

On Sunday, October 8th at 11am all are invited to gather in and around the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe’s (JCOGS) sukkah(temporary hut) to enjoy a delicious celebratory harvest brunch, followed by a Jazz concert performed by Classicopia.

Sukkot, or the “Feast of Booths”, commemorates the 40 years of Jewish wandering in the desert after the giving of the Torah and represents a time to give thanks for the bounty of the earth during the fall harvest, which coincides each year with the beauty of Vermont’s autumn leaf season.

This concert at JCOGS highlights the important place of Jewish instrumentalists, such as Benny Goodman, George Gershwin, and Artie Shaw, in bringing this new music to a wider white audience and into concert halls as well; elevating Jazz to a new cultural status. Loew and Weiser, who have both performed around the world, will perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and works by other Jewish composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Harold Arlen and Simon Sargon, who blended the sound of Klezmer and Jewish liturgical music with a new syncopated and jazzy sensibility.

This delightful “Sukkot Brunch and Jewish Jazz” fest is only $18 per person. JCOGS is handicap accessible and all are welcome. Reservations are appreciated, and may be made online at JCOGS.org or by phone through the JCOGS office at 802-253-1800.

For more information on Classicopia, please see their website: https://classicopia.org/

JCOGS is located at 1189 Cape Cod Road in Stowe.

He currently plays in several ensembles, including the Dave Keller Band, but this trio, featuring Micah Carbonneau on bass and Caleb Bronz on drums, has been playing together for 15 years. Ira says, “This trio plays original music inspired by Latin, African, jazz, funk and soul. They walk the tightrope featuring group exploration without ever losing the groove.”

The Adamant Community Club is located at 1161 Martin Road, just across from the Adamant Methodist Church. Admission is $12, under 12 for free. Seating is limited, so reserve your seats by emailing adamantcommunityclub@gmail.com or by calling 454-7103.

Originating as an informal jazz trio, vorcza has advanced to writing “adventurous yet accessible original material that marries jazz and funk with world-influenced rhythms. ” (tom huntington, times argus) their skillfully written compositions and their strong presence have earned them much deserved recognition as a powerhouse trio whose combined efforts include working and touring with musical greats including trey anastasio, dave matthews, jamie masefield, josh roseman, ernie watts, dave schools and lester bowie. The burlington, vermont based group is made up of ray paczkowski on organ and vocals, gabriel jarrett on drums, greg matses on guitar, and robinson morse on upright and electric bass (plus special guests!). The interplay between the three is remarkable as each member brings his own fascinating personal history to the group.
