EXHIBITS

Through Nov. 16: Nourish — Soil & Soul. Kathie Lovett’s paintings, sculpture and installation art will be featured in the exhibit at Northern Vermont University-Johnson. The exhibit and the opening reception 3-5 p.m. Nov. 7 at Julian Scott Memorial Gallery are free for the public. Lovett’s exhibit focuses on the themes of land, food, culture and politics. The artist, from Franconia, New Hampshire, is a student in NVU-Johnson’s Master of Fine Arts in studio arts program. The gallery is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Through Nov. 20: Listening to Rocks: Work by Dianne Shullenberger and John Snell. Dianne Shullenberger of Jericho is well known for her fabulously intricate fabric collage pieces that present landscape and nature in a unique way. John Snell is a photographer from Montpelier. Public reception: Friday, October 19, 5-7 pm. At 6 pm, there will be a short artist talk. All are welcome to this public reception to look, listen, and speak with the artists. Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery is located at 86 Falls Rd, in Shelburne Village. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 9:30-5:30 and Saturdays 10-5. Through Nov. 23: Matthew Sylvester Exhibit. Art by painter and illustrator Matthew Sylvester of East Calais will be featured at Quimby Gallery at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon. The exhibit and a gallery reception at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 are free for the public. The gallery’s regular hours are 8 am – 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Sylvester, who used to specialize in comics art, now is a freelance illustrator who creates book covers, movie posters, page illustrations and concept art. Through Nov 28: Paintings by Greg Kotyk. Oil paintings by Chelsea artist Greg Kotyk are on display in the Gifford Gallery at Gifford Medical Center. The exhibit, free and open to the public, includes mountainous landscapes from Vermont to Wyoming. A military veteran, Kotyk has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Through Nov. 30: Carole Naquin Exhibition. Her soft pastel paintings which capture the energy of sky, river and field.  They are calming, grounding, and alive.  View these landscapes at Artisans Hand Gallery, Montpelier; meet the artist during ART WALK September 6.

Through Dec. 2: Driving the Back Roads: In Search of Old-Time Vermonters. For nearly 50 years, Ethan Hubbard drove the back roads of rural Vermont in search of old-time Vermonters. This retrospective of Hubbard’s documentary work and his life living alongside the people of North-Central Vermont showcases more than 40 of Hubbard’s large-format black and white photographic portraits – pulled from some 600 rolls of film that he shot over five decades. Also included are audio excerpts chosen from 125 of Hubbard’s tape recordings and interviews. In barns and fields, from forest walks to kitchen tables, Ethan’s photographic portraits and audio recordings transport the viewer to rural Vermont and to the moments he shared with the people he met there. Through Dec. 16: Gerald Auten: Graphite Insomnia. Opening Reception October 20, Saturday, 4-6 pm. Gerald Auten uses powdered graphite or graphite pencils on dense, smooth hot-pressed paper or onto the back of old museum posters and postcards. To the powdered graphite, he adds a bonding element, WD40, turpentine, or linseed oil, often buffing the surface. The work takes many months to achieve the dense metallic, oily surfaces. The affect is luminous, deeply saturated, mysterious and mischievous. Through Dec. 28: Seven Women, Seven Walls. Featuring rotating exhibits by Vermont artists, the Council’s gallery is located in the corridor and conference room of the offices at 136 State Street in Montpelier. The space is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. with the corridor available every day. The conference room is closed Tuesdays until noon, and at other times when the room is occupied. Seven Vermont artists — Mary Admasian, Alisa Dworsky, Karen Henderson, Evie Lovett, Hannah Morris, Janet Van Fleet, and Kristen M. Through Jan. 7: Altered Spaces Group Exhibition. The exhibition opens with a dynamic collection of work – including collage, photography, painting, and multimedia installation in September which will build in layers throughout the Fall – inviting the public to revisit and interact as the exhibition continues.     Artist-in-Residence Gala Porras-Kim will present some of her past and ongoing projects
    dealing with the social and political contexts that influence the representation of language
    and history. The work comes from a research-based practice that aims to consider how
    intangible things, have been represented through different methodologies in the fields of
    linguistics, history and conservation.
