Body Recovered from River In Downtown Montpelier

MONTPELIER — On Thursday May 26 at approximately 12:24 p.m., the Montpelier Police Department received a call through 911 advising of a dead body that was in the river (North Branch of the Winooski) under the railroad bridge behind Shaw’s Supermarket located at 4 Main Street. The witnesses who called in the report were part of a group of canoers from the Montpelier High School who were preparing to put in their vessels off of the 60 State Street parking lot.
Montpelier Fire Department and Police Department responded to the scene and recovered the body, which was found face down, mid-channel of the river, directly under the railroad bridge. The water depth in the area was quite shallow, approximately one foot deep.
At this time, the cause of death is undetermined, but it does not appear to be suspicious. The body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington where an autopsy will be performed.
The deceased has been identified as Ulysses McLean, 44, of Barre.
No further information is available at this time.
